G.M.A.A. History
Founded over 50 years ago as the Greater Montreal Interscholastic
Athletic Association, the G.M.A.A. coordinates and promotes
school sports across the island of Montreal, the G.M.A.A.
is dedicated to the belief that sport is a key educational
tool, helping young
people grow physically, emotionally and intellectually.
Our members include the schools of the English Montreal School
Board, the Lester B. Pearson School Board and twenty three
private schools in the Montreal area.
Today the G.M.A.A. organizes over 30 sports activities serving
60,000 students in the elementary, and
the secondary schools.
We are proud that our population accounts for close to 20%
of the participation in interscholastic sports with less
than 6%
of the Quebec student population. 46% of the students who
compete in G.M.A.A. are female which brings us very close
to equality
of participation, a best in the province.
The team that wins the championship in each age category
in each of our 22 High school sports is presented with a
banner. Our
history in high school sports hangs in each member school
where these banners are hung with pride.
Many of our athletes receive our medals for winning these
championships or for being the runners up. Over 5000 medals
are given out to
our top athletes each year.
G.M.A.A. speaks not only of the future, but also of a history
of excellence and responsibility. |
